This is the story of Charlie Paige, a young ambitious businessman who has left his country town upbringing behind to be seduced by the faster pace of inner-city Melbourne. Charlie finds himself living a life he cannot afford; a life in which he barely recognises himself as the young man who once had ideals and integrity instilled from a farm upbringing. He has employment with influential businessmen who are willing to pay him a high price for his work and his soul. He is a drifter, with an appetite for women, alcohol, class A drugs and a consumerist lifestyle bought on credit. At the height of his ascendency within the influential firm, he is called to return home to the farm. A series of events follow which conspire to topple Charlie from his place in the world of movers and shakers. At the same time, however, he begins to rediscover his connection to the land. He is driven to choose to stay on the farm with his family and in the process uncovers corruption at the very heart of the country town which equals that of the high financiers of Melbourne. As Charlie battles to save the family farm and the love of his life, he must also come to terms with the greatest battle of all: against his inner self… The novel is set in Melbourne and fictional Greater Gambier City, and references a social context that is easily identified as modern day Australian.
